Matthew 1

The genealogy of Jesus the Messiah

1This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham:

2 Abraham was the father of Isaac,

Isaac the father of Jacob,

Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,

3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar,

Perez the father of Hezron,

Hezron the father of Ram,……………

………………….. 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.

17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.

Lord Jesus Christ, you came into the world in a special way and with a special purpose, but even you stepped into the ongoing journey of a people whose history stretched back for generations. Remind us today that our own journey did not simply begin with our birth, but that we came into this world standing on the shoulders of others –

Who gave us life

and added direction to our life

who embedded within us our values

                and led us to faith

In a moment of quiet we thank you for those who live in the flowing streams of our memory whose life’s journey may have come to an end, but whose example and memory still inspires us.

In another moment of quiet we contemplate the paths that we have chosen and the journeys that shape our days –

There are times when the road is hard

and the way is not obvious

in those times remind us of our roots

and may the example of the generations inspire us

Most especially, we ask that the one who was born of David’s line would guide us on the way, encourage us in our faith and inspire us in our living. Amen
