John 8: 12 (NRSVA)

12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.’

Most of us are not rejoicing about what is going on in our world. Whether our gaze is local, national, or international, our systems of politic are in demise, especially in the area of morals and ethics.

This verse is the announcement that ‘I AM’ is the light, the governing luminary, the one by whom we are to depend on to make sense of the world around us. And so we are invited to reinterpret everything in the light of Jesus’ invitation to step back into alignment with God and His purposes.

Scotland is mentioned in this verse. Skotia being the Greek from which Scotia derived its name! Our nation was named the land of darkness!

Praise God Jesus has a role for us, to follow him, and be beacons of life, zoe specifically, a kind of meta-physical term for life-force.

Put plainly, you are the people you have been waiting for. You have heard people being called a force of nature? Well, followers of Jesus are supposed to be a force of life! Whatever is going on, be the life and soul of it, according to Jesus, it is your job description in this Skotia, land of darkness, to be the light-life-force!

PRAYER:

As our prayer for today let’s pray the first verse of ‘Shine, Jesus Shine’ by Graham Kendrick:

“Lord the light of Your love is shining

in the midst of the darkness shining

Jesus, light of the world shine upon us

Set us free by the truth You now bring us

shine on me

shine on me…”
