Psalm 24

1 The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it,
    the world, and all who live in it;
2 for he founded it on the seas
    and established it on the waters.

3 Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord?
    Who may stand in his holy place?
4 The one who has clean hands and a pure heart,
    who does not trust in an idol
    or swear by a false god.

5 They will receive blessing from the Lord
    and vindication from God their Saviour.
6 Such is the generation of those who seek him,
    who seek your face, God of Jacob.

7 Lift up your heads, you gates;
    be lifted up, you ancient doors,
    that the King of glory may come in.
8 Who is this King of glory?
    The Lord strong and mighty,
    the Lord mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your heads, you gates;
    lift them up, you ancient doors,
    that the King of glory may come in.
10 Who is he, this King of glory?
    The Lord Almighty –
    he is the King of glory.

This psalm is often sung at Communion Services in the Church of Scotland. To hear it sung by over 1,000 commissioners in the hall of the General Assembly of the Church off Scotland is, as they say in the Scottish vernacular, an experience “better felt that telt”. The psalm invites us to
visualise the glory and the splendour of God. It’s a psalm of distancing and challenge in which the whole company of bystanders declares the requirements needed to enter into the courts of such a holy God. It is only through the cross of Christ that sinful bystanders like you and I can find our hands clean and our hearts pure. We stand in amazement asking how can this be?

PRAYER:

O Glorious King
Amazing friend
A thousand and unnumbered more
Stand with us ashamed and blessed
Forgiven and restored
Our hearts adore
We sing a song for millions o’re

We carry silver cups and plates
Poor symbols of your glory — not our wealth
We sing of doors and lifted gates
We break the bread and drink the wine
And bow ourselves before your throne
And in the silence we define
ourselves as yours

Come purifying fire of grace
Burn up the dross within our lives
Make us into a wholesome people
Living out the Gospel sequel
Seeking justice shaped by mercy
Living out the Gospel message
Let refining fire be our cross
And holy distancing our joy
