John 14: 15-16

15 “If you love me, you will obey my commandments. 16 I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, who will stay with you forever.

As I was growing up, my minister told a story at school that has always stayed with me. He talked about a boy in an Native American tribe who had to undergo several tests in order to become a Brave. He passed all the tests and one remained – he had to spend a night alone in the forest. This seemed simple, but the story goes it was very dark at night – so dark that he couldn’t even see his hands in front of his face. He tried to get to sleep but he couldn’t because he was afraid when he heard all sorts of noises in the forest. Finally, daybreak came and he felt much better. A voice behind him said, “Good morning”. It was his father. He recounted to his father about how he was afraid and couldn’t rest all night. His father told him he needn’t have been afraid, for he had been with him, sitting behind him all night long. Lovely story. 

We are never alone because we have the Helper, the Spirit with us, through every moment of every day of our lives. Thanks be to God!

Prayer:

Wonderful God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, ever three and ever one, we thank you for your guiding presence with us through the day and your watchful care during the night. We thank you that you hold us in your care always, rejoicing with us in the good times, strengthening us when we walk through the dark valleys. And even at the last, when our final breath comes, we will still be with you in heaven. In the meantime, Father hug us into life, Jesus walk and talk with us, Spirit weave in and through our lives. Amen.
