1 Thessalonians 5: 16-24 (NRSVA)

16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise the words of prophets, 21 but test everything; hold fast to what is good; 22 abstain from every form of evil.

23 May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do this.

I follow an American horse sanctuary on Facebook. They save wild horses who have been rounded up from the slaughter pipeline. In October this year they had saved a horse called Rango from a killpen. It was discovered that Rango had come to the auction with a special friend called Commander but Commander had been sold to a different livestock dealer. It was feared that Commander might have already been sent for slaughter or sent to a Mexican rodeo where he’d be used as a trip horse. But supporters of this sanctuary didn’t give up, searching and searching for him online, phoning up auctions. I remember the Lord saying to me at the time, they are going to find him, have faith. And so I was praying that they would find Commander. And they did! The faith and perseverance of the tenacious supporters paid off. Commander was then brought to the sanctuary and reunited with his friend Rango. There was so much rejoicing as this horse had been saved from certain death. Some of you might be thinking, it is just a horse. But isn’t it joyful, isn’t it miraculous when what was thought lost is found? When what was thought dead, is in fact alive?

Friends, life can be complicated and heartbreaking. No matter what is going on in your life, keep praying. No matter what we see on our TV screens try to keep the faith. For our Lord Jesus loves us so much he took to the cross and defeated the grave, to save us from the death of our sins, to give us eternal life with our Father God. There is no greater love. He will never forsake you, he will never forsake the world.

PRAYER:

Lord Jesus,

In the face of suffering and pain

Help me today Lord to keep the faith

Help me to believe that your love can and will overcome the darkness.

Amen
