Psalm 14: 2 (NIV)

2 The Lord looks down from heaven
    on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand,
    any who seek God.

Are there any that understand? David wonders in his song, a cry that imagines how God feels. Aren’t we fascinating creatures: humans? God has gifted us with imaginations and to some even the ability to imagine what God might think or feel. The Psalms are wonderful poems and songs capturing so many emotions and travelling down to us through the Bible, that wonderful book which is not picky about the genre of its contents.

David cries out on God’s behalf and the truth to his anguished question is often: no, we don’t understand. We try and we learn and we sometimes get it right. But God is not surprised by this. God who made creativity and understands frailty is not surprised. God simply plants more seeds in stories and in our minds that one day they might grow and we might finally understand.

God of our songs and our stories
You see our frustrations and you hear our cries
Be with us as we struggle to understand the messages you have given us
Help us to discern what the Bible holds and what it might mean
Never stop inspiring us to sing out our praise and longings
Amen.
