Power beyond words

Matthew 15: 10-11 (NIV)

10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. 11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”

“Promises, promises!” The cynic might say that we live in an age of empty words and broken promises in public life. People are inclined to disbelieve promises made by those who are meant to serve us. In private life too, we make it hard for ourselves by speaking promises that are not easy to keep. “I will always be at your side”, or “I will never let you down” invite failure and disaster, for none of us are perfect! Perhaps better to be honest and say, “I’ll do my best, but I know I’ll make mistakes. Please forgive me when that happens.”

In human relationships, there is nothing quite like speaking from the heart. Words spoken out of anger and spite can cause deep hurt, but words of genuine love and reconciliation can bring about great healing. If we show from our heart deeply genuine forgiveness and grace, such expressions have power beyond words.

PRAYER:

Lord, you know the deepest needs of every family. We pray for healing of fractured family bonds. Breathe your unity throughout each family. Where anger rises, let peace endure. Where selfishness chokes, let sacrifice be stronger. May your mercy flow in and through each unique situation. Let the soothing balm of your Spirit spread truth, light, and life. Amen.
