Philippians 4: 7 (NRSVA)

7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Do you ever find that in an attempt to correct something you end up swinging pendulum style too far the other way? I do. In an attempt to better myself or my technique I create a whole new problem and still haven’t completely solved the problem I had in the first place.

This was no less true when I tried to be intentionally more openhearted. Inexperienced I threw open the doors and let everything in. I learned the hard way that to be openhearted does not mean to be unguarded but rather to be intentionally un-closed. Un-closed to new possibilities, people, experiences and even to new points of view.

It took time and I think will probably take the rest of my life for me to truly achieve healthy openheartedness. My pendulum will swing wildly before one day coming to rest but I will keep trying because the people in this world need my heart to be open, they need your heart to be open and we all need God’s help to make it so.

PRAYER:

God heart of the world
Help us to open our hearts to each other and keep us safe as we stumble with ineptitude.
Bless us all in this time where hearts shut tight in self defence.
Guide us ever closer to your heart.
Amen.
