1 Peter 1: 3-5 (NRSVA)

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

New birth, new start, each year a garden regrows, rearranges, reinvents. Older roots are torn out by the gardener, new ones grow in their place, stronger and more far-reaching, connecting the garden. As we now know trees are connecting to one another beneath our feet all the time in new ways, communicating and reconfiguring.

In these verses from 1 Peter, Christ is described as imperishable, undefiled and unfading; everything that we as humans in our world are not. We must fade and we must perish but that is not our only future we have our inheritance: the love of Christ and a promise of peace. While we remain on earth growing in this garden of God we can be given new birth, new chapters, new ideas and we can spread out roots reaching for each other reaching for goodness that can always be found no matter how deep it is buried.

PRAYER:

Imperishable Jesus,
Stand with us when we confront our fears and our future
Help as to see hope, salvation, connection, possibilities
Bring us into new life through you
Amen.
