Keep us silent

Isaiah 9:6

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Lord,
I heard the pips
And then the silence
As Big Ben chimed,
a News Reader announced,
Tuesday 11 November
I listened carefully
I heard the news
‘Platform One’
Central Station
Glasgow,
Is the place;
to be.
To remember.

At 11 am all will be silent; for just two minutes.
From this spot many left, with real hope.
On rails leading south.
Railroaded by popular opinion.
Convinced they’d be back home for Christmas.

Lord,
They met you on platform one
You were there.
Standing silently,
Walking walking between the lines
Reading every thought and action
You lived their  anxious moments
as a Tommy smoked his woodbine
You gave your gift
Your life
Your cross
Your death
Your resurrection
And many received the gift

Lord,
Keep us silent
In order to remember
the cost of no returned
And while they never saw
a Christmas tree
or heard a baby cry,
they left a costly gift
unwrapped
given without a word spoken
Help us hold this gift of peace firmly in our hands.
