Joy in the Ordinary things

Alec Shuttleworth December 27, 2015 0 0

Luke 2:7

And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

Suddenly it is about the practical. Where, how, clothes, shelter? The incarnation is as messy and ordinary a miracle as any human life is.

Dear God
We live practical lives
We need to work
To plan
To attend to the ordinary
To come off the mountain top
And be in the valley.

We rejoice that we do not stay in this week
This week with its excesses of sentimentality
Of rich food
Of party and pantomime

We rejoice
That angels sang
And shepherds prayed
That wise men paid homage

And then left
And Mary changed the linen
And fed the infant
And crooned as he cooried.

From this ordinariness
Which we share
We are joyful

Amen.
