Romans 12: 9-13 (NIVUK)

9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervour, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practise hospitality.

Last week was Refugee Week, where we were invited to reflect on the lives of those who have had to flee conflict, disaster, persecution, or the effects of climate change in search of safety and sanctuary. Many arrive in our communities carrying with them trauma and loss. Yet increasingly they are met with hostility, suspicion and resistance. Perhaps due to the narrative from certain political parties and branches of the media.

Paul’s words in Romans 12 call us to an active, practical, sacrificial love. As followers of Jesus we are called to hospitality, not just the cosy kind but to radical love in our hearts, our language and our politics.

God’s call isn’t comfortable but it is clear. We are called to love deeply, bless freely and welcome generously.

Prayer:

Lord God

Give us the love to speak for the stranger

To stand beside the vulnerable and build communities where love is more than a feeling – it’s a sincere, practical way of life.

Amen
