Romans 12: 14-18 (NIVUK)

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.

17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

I cry all the time when I’m watching TV. I cry so much that now when an animal or children’s charity advert comes on the TV, my dog Pup will turn round to see if I’m crying and will come over to comfort me.

It can be difficult though to share the pain of others in ‘real life’, in-person. What do you say? What if I say the wrong thing? How do I best comfort them? We can shy away from visiting people going through the worst times in their lives because we are uncomfortable. We feel we don’t have anything to offer. In our feelings of inadequacy we can fail to connect, to offer the comfort of the Lord.

A wise person once told me that all we can do is be present for people going through the worst times in their lives. We don’t need to say anything. We don’t need to do anything. We just need to be present. To sit and be with them in their pain.

Prayer:

Lord God

Give me the courage to be present today

Present for someone who needs it most

And as I am present be present in me

Amen
