Genesis 21: 1-6 (NRSVA)

1 The Lord dealt with Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as he had promised. 2 Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the time of which God had spoken to him. 3 Abraham gave the name Isaac to his son whom Sarah bore him. 4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him. 5 Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. 6 Now Sarah said, ‘God has brought laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh with me.

People often comment on my laugh. I laugh often and loud. People often say they know I’m coming before they see me as they can hear me laughing. My son says I have Fraggle mentality. You know, those colourful creatures from the 80s children’s show Fraggle Rock? The theme tune for the show includes the lyrics, “Dance your cares away, worries for another day.” Maybe I am a Fraggle as I do like to dance my cares away. I’m not blind though to reality or the brokenness of the world. I’m well aware of it and it pains me. It causes me to hurt. It makes me want to reach out and to try and make a difference.

I just like to find the joy within life; to find the absurd and laugh. It can make what at first appears overwhelming easier to deal with. It can make the pain easier to bear. Laughter is infectious, and it is a gift from God. There is nothing better than big belly laughs, laughing so hard you can hardly breathe. Laughter that brings light in the darkness, laughter that lifts the gloom, laughter that spreads joy. Today embrace your inner Fraggle and spread God’s joy with laughter and love.

PRAYER:

Father God,
Giver of life and love
Help us to be glad today
Help us to rejoice that we are your children.
Fill our hearts with joy, song and laughter
So that we may spread your love to all those we meet today.

Lent Disciplines

The Transforming Breath: Each morning this week spend 5 minutes mindful of your breath, perhaps breathing slowly in and out. As you do consider the day ahead and think of all the places and situations your breath is going to take you today. You may wish to say a short prayer offering the upcoming day to God.
