Psalm 124: 1-5

1 If the Lord had not been on our side –
    let Israel say –
2 if the Lord had not been on our side
    when people attacked us,
3 they would have swallowed us alive
    when their anger flared against us;
4 the flood would have engulfed us,
    the torrent would have swept over us,
5 the raging waters
    would have swept us away.

Psalm 124 begins, ‘If the Lord had not been on our side’.

Augustine is moved to apply for a position in Rome teaching rhetoric but on the journey there he falls ill… “And lo, there I was received by the scourge of bodily sickness, and I was going down to hell, carrying all the sins which I had committed, both against Thee and myself, and others, many and grievous, … and now the fever heightening, I was parting and departing forever”.

But great is his rejoicing when he realises that again his mother’s prayers have been answered and he is spared, “And this she [his mother] knew not, yet in absence prayed for me. but Thou, everywhere present, heardest her where she was, and, where I was, hadst compassion upon me; that I should recover the health of my body.”

It would definitely seem from reading Augustine’s Confessions that he is aware of looking back over his life and seeing God’s hand at work in it… even when he himself was far from God.

Spend some time looking back, over the days and events of your life…

Are there any occasions where you have felt God at work in your life or perhaps someone has told you that they’ve been praying for you in your walk with God? Perhaps you might like to take this opportunity to journal about it, or maybe even share it with others…

Lord,

Whether we are aware of it or not you walk through each day beside us,

There is nowhere that we can go from your presence,

If we go to the heights you are there,

And even in the depths we cannot escape you…

Such is your love for us,

A love that left the throne of heaven,

A love that searches even to the ends of the earth until those that you love are found…

I wonder at that love…

I praise you for that love,

And Lord, I thank you for that love…

For me.

Amen.
