Christ leads us to revelation
Listen to this daily worship
Matthew 17: 1-9 (NIV-UK)
1 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. 3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
4 Peter said to Jesus, ‘Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters – one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.’
5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!’
6 When the disciples heard this, they fell face down to the ground, terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them. ‘Get up,’ he said. ‘Don’t be afraid.’ 8 When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.
9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, ‘Don’t tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.’
Did you know, that if the average person (that is you) stands with their feet in the ocean that average person will A: get both their feet wet, and B: be able to see about three miles out to sea? The curvature of the earth bends the surface away from us and allows that wonderful phenomenon of ships disappearing over the horizon.
In fact, if you are standing with a friend who is a foot taller than you, they will be able to see about another 400-500 yards out to sea.
In our reading today Jesus doesn’t simply take the disciples to the shore to see something new, he doesn’t even give them something slightly taller to stand on. Jesus takes us to the mountaintop to learn something new. To give us clarity to see beyond what is normally possible and open our eyes to a new way of being.
Jesus shares his divinity at the top of the mountain, with his disciples and with us. He lifts his authority from possibly being seen as the ‘good words of a good man’, to that of the divine entwining themselves with us in the day-to-day tasks of life.
As our elevation increases the further we can see, beyond those three miles, and as we allow ourselves to journey up the mountain with Christ we are able to be lifted beyond the day-to-day to see our role as co-creators with God.
Prayer:
Dear God,
Lift our eyes towards you; that we might climb the mountains that are before us, that we might get to know you more.
Amen.
