John 6: 35 (NIV-UK)

35 Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

I like this verse not just for itself but also for its context. Jesus and the disciples are having a discussion about miraculous signs. They have just witnessed the feeding of the five thousand and Jesus walking on water and Jesus is trying to impart some deep spiritual knowledge but his followers seem to be hung up on being fed. And honestly who can blame them, if I just found out my pal could make bread miraculously appear I would definitely be asking for more bread. I love bread!

Here in verse 35 Jesus has finally managed to get to his point, I imagine with a smirk at his food focused friends, that he is the bread God is sending and that faith will sustain people.

Which sounds awesome, but the thought creeps in at the back of my mind… what if it’s lunch time?

Luckily we know from all that has been written about Jesus and his travels with his friends that he loved a good bit of lunch as well. He gets it, and so God gets it and so we pray for daily bread not just in our souls but in our belly too, for us and for everyone.

Prayer:

God of sustenance, God of souls

You have felt in your own divinely human stomach the rumblings of hunger, the pangs of need,

You feel the desperation of the hungry both in soul and in body.

The child with no breakfast struggling to concentrate in class longing for lunch,

The children fleeing war, sitting in a tent with no promise of food coming at all.

We know that faith can sustain their souls,

God please help us to be the reason that food sustains their bodies.

Amen
