Room to spare for the Trinity
Listen to this daily worship
Hebrews 1: 1-3 (NIVUK)
1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.
Life can be a bit of a puzzle to try and figure out. And God watches us in much the same way as an adult watches their children. As they fit the pieces together with a little tender encouragement, children express their excitement, “Ah! here it is!” With help and encouragement, God gently speaks to us in quiet prayerful moments, until His truth dawns on us and we too have our “Ah!” moment of understanding.
These three verses today from the letter to the Hebrews contain an abundance of spiritual insight to help us fathom life’s dilemmas and mysteries.
The passage reminds us that God has repeatedly intervened in history. God created humanity for a purpose, and He has communicated with people from the beginning of their existence. The Old Testament scriptures testify to an overflowing of His Word. He gave insight and inspiration to kings and shepherds, queens and handmaidens, priests and paupers, prophets and pilgrims; though each was given only a measure of His revelation. Then God’s full truth came through His Son, Jesus Christ. Those desiring to understand God and His plan for humanity must look to Jesus.
Jesus told his disciples that when he was no longer present in body, the Father would send the Holy Spirit to be alongside them and within them. God the Holy Spirit has no boundaries.
So it is that the community of God’s being, united in the trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit, has room and to spare for us all.
Prayer:
Lord God, I praise You for Your infinite grace in revealing Yourself to humankind through the prophets at many times and in various ways. Thank You that You do not consider it too small a thing to speak to us your word of mercy and love. Most of all, gracious Father, thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus our Messiah, the ultimate revelation of who You are, and whose Spirit is Your gift to help and strengthen me daily. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
