Genesis 2: 1-3 (NIV)

1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.

2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

How many people reading this are guilty of never switching their computer fully off?

How about their mobile phone?

I am extremely guilty of this to the point that sometimes the devices take matters out of my inept hands and turn themselves off for a while all on their own.

I feel like God is entirely with them in this decision. Rest, pause, stop, reboot, turn your nervous system off and on again before it melts down like so many microchips overheating.

You get the idea.

I find it hard to do, I find it even harder to do regularly once a week. But those precious times I do manage it: switching off from the noise, the rush, the screens and demands, those times are glorious. My body relaxes into itself, my feet feel solid on the ground again, my mind finds joy in the sky and the earth and the sound of the wind and the birds in the trees.

Perhaps God has been waiting for me there this whole time, perhaps God is waiting for you there right now…

Prayer:

God of rest

Help us to remember to pause sometimes

Really… properly… pause

Be with us as our lives get busier

Remind us to follow your example

Connect with us again God, refresh our hearts
