Philippians 2: 20 (NRSVA)

20 I have no one like him who will be genuinely concerned for your welfare.

Paul says that Timothy is the real deal, an example of exemplary leadership — he genuinely cares about the welfare of others. How can we make sure we maintain genuine care for the welfare of others?

What we’re going to do now is compare Timothy with the Management and Efficacious Solutions Consultant Mr E.E. Blodgins. While Mr Blodgins is entirely fictitious he assures you that he is heavily qualified in maximal strategic leveraging and lateral asset optimisation.

Challenge 1: Checking in with the team.

Mr. Blodgins: Okay let’s zoom in on the granular, pan to some peripherals, double back on the top priorities and ensure each person is individualised.

Timothy: Hey, how’s it going? I’ve missed you lot.

Challenge 2: Following up with ongoing team concerns.

Mr Blodgins: Right, time to circle back, we’ve got some flags to survey and I’m hearing some of the flags are large, just large, large flags, some of them might be red or at least russet, we’ve got some russet flags to go over to enhance progress reporting aims.

Timothy: How can I help?

Challenge 3: Encouraging the team.

Mr Blodgins: No stick, all carrot, let’s do away with the stick, the stick is so over, it’s all carrot, when I see something worth encouraging I’ll encourage it, trust me, I’m Mr Encouragement and in fact Encouragement is also my middle name… and eh, ‘Very’ is my first name so I’m Very Encouragement Encouragement, in a manner of speaking. That’s just me, I just say it like I see it, I will encourage you to perform to the very highest of your ability, leaving no encouraging stone unturned. All carrot, carrot risotto here, all carrot, no stick. Leave your sticks behind.

Timothy: You make my heart glad.

Prayer:

Tune us in Lord to the welfare of others,

that we

like Timothy,

might follow you closely.

Amen.
