Deuteronomy 30: 8-14 (NIVUK)

8 You will again obey the Lord and follow all his commands I am giving you today. 9 Then the Lord your God will make you most prosperous in all the work of your hands and in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your land. The Lord will again delight in you and make you prosperous, just as he delighted in your ancestors, 10 if you obey the Lord your God and keep his commands and decrees that are written in this Book of the Law and turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

11 Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach. 12 It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask, ‘Who will ascend into heaven to get it and proclaim it to us so that we may obey it?’ 13 Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask, ‘Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so that we may obey it?’ 14 No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so that you may obey it.

In today’s Bible passage we are assured that God's commands are not rocket science!  They are within our reach, readily available deep down in our hearts. Indeed they emerge often in our conversation, “the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart…” (verse 14). This is a beautiful reminder that God’s love is active and present.

God’s loving nature makes His guidance accessible and close for us. Our loving God doesn’t make His message hard to find; He brings it near, ensuring that we have what we need to walk naturally and easily with Him.

The idea that God’s Word is “in your heart” implies that true obedience comes from an internal transformation, not just external lip service.

This is a vivid picture of how God’s commands can become second nature to us, a part of who we are, influencing us from the inside out. So, as an integral part of our daily lives, we are gently led into a life of blessing and of peace.

Often in the scriptures, especially in the poetry of the Psalms, the word ‘delight’ is to be found in tandem with the ‘law of God’. A total and sincere return to God, with all the heart and soul, brings joy to the Father’s heart, a joy which will effortlessly rise and well up from deep within us too.

Prayer:

Lord God, source of all real joy, Your word teaches me the way of true life. Your blessings await me when I awake and gently lull me to sleep at night. Your love surrounds me and encourages me each day, whatever outward circumstances I may face. I thank You for the joy which wells up from within me whenever I pause to draw on Your strength. I thank You for the freedom to rejoice, to be at peace, to enjoy life, and for my joy to overflow every day. Amen.
