Psalm 1: 1-3 (NIV-UK)

1 

Blessed is the one
    who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
    or sit in the company of mockers,

2 

but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
    and who meditates on his law day and night.

3 

That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
    which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither –
    whatever they do prospers.

The Bible is not a book. 

It’s a forest. 

It’s an impossibly ancient woodland — pages reversed back into trees — 

a rushing sound

of rustling leaves.

It gives us shelter

and fuel

and nourishment

beauty and wonder

mystery and adventure.

The trees here are planted by streams of water

they draw life from the very earth and give it freely.

The Bible is a forest

of thought and prayer

an understory of love and a canopy of hope.

Its roots go deep and its leaves are veined with God’s breath.

The Bible is not a book, 

come sit at one of its trunks

you are not alone

even in the quiet

the forest breathes

there is a cairn next to you

a sign someone has been this way

just recently.

Prayer:

Dear God

We are so grateful that your Bible is here for us

a forest of fruit, of shelter, of nourishment and protection.

Guide us as we walk through in wonder.

Amen.
