2 Timothy 3:14–4:5 (NRSVA)

14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it, 15 and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work.

(4) 1 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: 2 proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favourable or unfavourable; convince, rebuke, and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. 3 For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths. 5 As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully.

After years of school and university the researcher has learned how to investigate a problem, draw a conclusion and propose a new finding. But it takes so long, perhaps he thinks there is a short cut…

PRAYER:

Vocation calling Father,

Life–directing Spirit,

service inspiring Saviour,

We long to answer your call, be directed into your life, serve in your example.

How can we carry on?

We did hear, we have answered,

We have given our lives in vocation.

Your self–giving example has called from us a desire to prefer each other’s needs.

But it’s still going on, it never seems to stop.

We’ve taken up the vocation, when will we get a vacation?

We can’t keep going for ever.

Just when we think we’ve got the hang of one thing,

You call us to something else; you ask for more from us.

Will you never be satisfied; will nothing ever be enough for you?

Continuing God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit,

We bless you now and always that you continue.

You are the God who continually achieves your own vocation.

From all everlasting to everlasting,

You have purposed to save us,

You have chosen to be reconciled to us,

You continue in your everlasting purpose of grace.

There is not one moment of one day when you are not engaged for us and our salvation.

You are the God who continually reaches out for more.

You will never pour out enough blessing,

You will never save to yourself enough people,

You never give up, but continually strive for more.

There is not one life, not one inch of creation which you do not long for.

It is your example which has taught us,

It is your faithfulness we have trusted,

It is you, the God we are knowing more and more each day,

Who has taught us these things.

Continue to faithfully pour out your Spirit upon us,

That we may continually live in your calling upon our lives.
