Hanging On

Hebrews 10: 24-25

Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

My friends thought I was mad when I started coming here.
‘What do you get out of it?’
‘No more golf on Sunday?’
‘Isn’t it full of old ladies?’
But I was unsettled, unfulfilled,
And through Your people You brought me contentment and hope.
The preaching excited me.
The praise uplifted me.
The love surrounded me.
Now?
I feel disconnected, disorientated, disturbed.
I push myself out the door on Sundays.
I force a smile for the people.
I listen but the words ricochet somewhere else.

I’ve heard of people like me,
The ones who burn brightly for a time
And then burn out.
That was never to be me,
But now it’s going through the motions,
Being here but taking nothing away,
Feeling awkward.
Lord, help me to hang on,
Trusting that as You filled me once You can fill me again
And take me forward through the night of sorrow to the morning of hope.
