Handle with Care

August 20, 2012 0 1

Genesis 1: 27-30

So God created mankind in his own image,

    in the image of God he created them;

male and female he created them.

God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground. ”

Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food. ” And it was so.

Imagine that you manage to make something utterly beautiful, incredibly delicate, wonderfully intricate and superbly crafted.  It is your greatest effort.  You have put every ounce of yourself into it, and then on completion you hand it over, willingly and happily, for others far less skilled and gifted to enjoy and manage on your behalf.

That’s what God did in creation.

This world and everything in it is his amazing gift to us.

Father God

Creator of the universe

From whom all things come,

Thank you for the beauty of your earth –

But why…?

Why did you entrust it to us?

You handed on the baton of caring for your creation to humanity

And we stumble and stutter with it.

We undo what you have done.

And worse still, we take it all for granted.

In the sunshine glinting through the leaves on the trees…

As the rain falls and then is held in droplets on flower petals…

As the wind whips up the seas and orchestrates whole forests to move in rhythm –

May we appreciate how amazing is all you have made.

May we vow to pass it on to future generations

With the tag

“Handle with Care”.

May we see you in it all

And live with both the joy and responsibility

Of being so trusted by you.

In the name of Christ. Amen
