Ephesians 1: 4-7 (NRSVA)

4 just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. 5 He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace

Last week I was asking my Mum’s advice about a decision I had to make. We didn’t agree on the best course of action but my Mum said: ‘It’s your life, I can’t tell you what to do!’ This reminded me of her often used line when me and my brother were growing up: ‘You can do what you want as long as you can take the consequences.’ This would always make me stop and think. I quickly realised I did not want to face the consequences of my actions and so would end up doing the right thing, which was what my Mum wanted me to do! She is a wise woman, my Mum!

So when my Mum said: ‘It’s your life I can’t tell you what to do,’ I thought to myself she is probably right and I should follow her advice. Especially as what my Mum was saying was what God had originally been saying to me!

Like my Mum, God has gifted us with freewill. Thankfully though he has given us the loving example of Jesus and his word to help us make sound life choices. And thankfully when we make the wrong choices we are not lost forever. For through the saving power of the cross, Jesus offers us forgiveness and the opportunity of a new life.

Today as a prayer sing Amazing Grace to the Lord:

Amazing grace, How sweet the sound

That saved a wretch like me.

I once was lost, but now I am found,

Was blind, but now I see.

'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,

And grace my fears relieved.

How precious did that grace appear

The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares

I have already come,

'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far

And grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me

His word my hope secures;

He will my shield and portion be,

As long as life endures.
