Exodus 4: 13-16 (NRSVA)

13 But he said, ‘O my Lord, please send someone else.’ 14 Then the anger of the Lord was kindled against Moses and he said, ‘What of your brother Aaron the Levite? I know that he can speak fluently; even now he is coming out to meet you, and when he sees you his heart will be glad. 15 You shall speak to him and put the words in his mouth; and I will be with your mouth and with his mouth, and will teach you what you shall do. 16 He indeed shall speak for you to the people; he shall serve as a mouth for you, and you shall serve as God for him.

"We look forward to using, discovering and being surprised by the gifts that God has given to us and to the people around us.” — Scargill community promise.

In today’s Bible reading, Moses was really reluctant to do the job that God was calling him to. Yet God knew that part of his personality, and had already set in motion the arrival of his brother Aaron to be there to support him and share in the burdens and joys of speaking out the messages from God.

Part of my role within the Scargill community is to work as a personal assistant to Phil, the community leader. It entails: diary keeping, chasing up emails, tidying books, finding resources, planning and being an encourager.

In terms of skill sets and personality we are opposites — I am quiet, organised, contained, happy to be in the background; he loves to be in the limelight, is gregarious, and wants to say ‘yes’ to many opportunities… Yet, there is an understanding between us of what we are trying to achieve that means that we work well together and have fun in the process.

I first met Phil back in 1991, he was involved in a charity where I did a Christian service gap year. I would never have believed that we would have been working together here at Scargill House for these past twelve years — but God knew and God has given this as our common task.

Here, God brings opportunities for us to offer and discover our talents and interests into the shared life — and through this I am more connected to the person that God has created me to be, allowing the compartments between work, family, hobbies and church to blur. This gives me the courage to explore what might be possible to create and dance and sing and speak, as together we serve God in this place.

PRAYER:

God,

You know my uncertainties,

But you also see my Godly potential.

Show me whom you have placed beside me as encourager

In the call you have placed on my life.

Help me to trust that you will lead the way.
