Psalm 145: 1-5, 17-21 (NRSVA)

1 I will extol you, my God and King,
    and bless your name for ever and ever.
2 Every day I will bless you,
    and praise your name for ever and ever.
3 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
    his greatness is unsearchable.

4 One generation shall laud your works to another,
    and shall declare your mighty acts.
5 On the glorious splendour of your majesty,
    and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.

17 The Lord is just in all his ways,
    and kind in all his doings.
18 The Lord is near to all who call on him,
    to all who call on him in truth.
19 He fulfils the desire of all who fear him;
    he also hears their cry, and saves them.
20 The Lord watches over all who love him,
    but all the wicked he will destroy.

21 My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,
    and all flesh will bless his holy name for ever and ever.

My Granddad died when I was eleven years old. He was Polish, big and strong and full of love. He always seemed like a giant to me. He would hold me and my brother in his lap so tightly, singing us Polish songs.

You might remember I told you before that my Granddad’s English wasn’t great so to show his love he would cook for us, making us huge feasts! Everything about my Grandad was big, including his cooking. He would make the biggest, fluffiest pancakes and donuts. Each mouthful tasted like love.

A couple of months ago I was feeling a bit overwhelmed and anxious. It came into my mind that I was going to try and make some of the dishes my Grandad used to make. And what a comfort. I felt that love of my Grandad enveloping me from beyond the grave. It was just what I needed. I’m now mastering the pancakes and can make my wee Grandson the biggest, fluffiest, most delicious pancakes!

PRAYER:

Lord,

From generation to generation your children share and pass on your love.

Help us to take strength in the saints who have gone before us.

And help us to be a comfort and guide to all who are just getting to know you.

Everyday give us courage to share your love with all those who still haven't found you yet.

Amen
