Psalm 105:1-6, 16-22, 45b (NRSVA)

1 O give thanks to the Lord, call on his name,
    make known his deeds among the peoples.
2 Sing to him, sing praises to him;
    tell of all his wonderful works.
3 Glory in his holy name;
    let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
4 Seek the Lord and his strength;
    seek his presence continually.
5 Remember the wonderful works he has done,
    his miracles, and the judgements he has uttered,
6 O offspring of his servant Abraham,
    children of Jacob, his chosen ones.

16 When he summoned famine against the land,
    and broke every staff of bread,
17 he had sent a man ahead of them,
    Joseph, who was sold as a slave.
18 His feet were hurt with fetters,
    his neck was put in a collar of iron;
19 until what he had said came to pass,
    the word of the Lord kept testing him.
20 The king sent and released him;
    the ruler of the peoples set him free.
21 He made him lord of his house,
    and ruler of all his possessions,
22 to instruct his officials at his pleasure,
    and to teach his elders wisdom.

45b
Praise the Lord!

‘They bruised his feet with shackles, his neck was put in irons till what he foretold came to pass, till the word of the Lord proved him true.’

Because we don’t want to listen, don’t want to be challenged, we often denigrate and bring down those who speak out, who speak the truth.

Just look at Greta Thunberg. Greta a teenager grew distressed about climate change and the kind of broken, scorched world she and her generation would inherit.

Greta spoke out.

She protested.

She encouraged other young people to do the same.

She has tried to engage with those in power, to influence the adults and world leaders into action.

And yes, Greta has made headlines, she has won awards but she has also been denigrated, brought down, insulted, made a figure of fun by the media. People roll their eyes at the mention of her name. She is infantilised as ‘Wee Greta’. She even has a Spitting Image puppet.

But Greta is right. She has been speaking the truth. June 2023 was our planet’s hottest month on record. We need to act now, before climate change is irreversible. God can use the unlikeliest people for his work. I think God has been speaking through Greta Thunberg. Will we allow him to work through us, each and every one of us, to help protect our shared home, planet earth?
