Ever Present God

Psalm 73 : 21 - 26

When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered,

I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you.
Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.

You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.

Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

You are always with me Lord, a holy presence which never tires nor fades.
For that knowledge and for all that I have already experienced of it - I give you thanks.

And I am always with you, even when it feels, in my guilt, that have wandered far from you,
still I walk in the presence of your love.
For that knowledge and for all that I have already experienced of it - I give you thanks.

You hold me and you guide and me and you lead me to where you intend me to be.
For that knowledge and for all that I have experienced of it - I give you thanks.

Yet today I would also remember that your promises are not limited to me,
nor even to those around me,
nor even to those who are like me.

Your presence breaks through even barrier which comes up in my thinking,
and through every division which grows up in my culture.

For all of your human creations are united in knowing what it is to be grieved and embittered,
all are capable of being senseless and ignorant,
and all are recipients of your amazing love.

May I not be jealous of the widespread generosity of your love,
or want to restrict to people I like,
rather may I be grateful that it extends wide enough to include even me.
