Ezekiel 34: 20-22a

So now, I the Sovereign Lord, tell you that I will judge between you strong sheep and the weak sheep. You pushed the sick ones aside and butted them away from the flock. But I will rescue my sheep and not let them be ill-treated any more.

Leaders of nations, politicians, clergy, actors, teachers, judges, people with wealth or position…even the person slightly higher up on the scale than us at work…there is always the possibility of power being used wisely or foolishly, for good or bad, for self or others. It has been said there is a Gospel bias to the poor, but is there not also a Biblical bias to the weak and those who get trampled on in the quest for power, on a large or small scale, in our world?

Sovereign Lord, guide all those in places of influence or power in our world and in our lives, that they may use their position to uplift the poor and the weak. If not humble pie, let them at least have a large slice of the cake of humility. Help us to know ourselves loved by you, no more and no less than our neighbours and to be at peace with you, our God, knowing that you hold this world and all its people in our care. In the name of the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
