Burdens

Ecclesiastes 7:14-18

In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider: God has made the one as well as the other, so that man may not find out anything that will be after him.

In my vain life I have seen everything. There is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who prolongs his life in his evildoing. Be not overly righteous, and do not make yourself too wise. Why should you destroy yourself? Be not overly wicked, neither be a fool. Why should you die before your time? It is good that you should take hold of this, and from that withhold not your hand, for the one who fears God shall come out from both of them.

Prayer
God who is peace,
why have you set this burden within us?

Why have you made us to strive after what is beyond us?

When all is well,
in the day of prosperity and joy,
we seek more and do not know you in this day.
when all is trouble,
in the day of adversity and trail,
we seek release, plenty and comfort,
we do not know you with us in this day.

Our pursuit of more,
more wealth, more power,
more righteousness
destroys today in futility.

Teach us one thing that is not futile,
teach us to know you,
to live with you this life you have given us.

Fill our days with Christ and the Spirit,
Fill our hands with what you would give us,
satisfy us with all that is from you.

If we are to be burdened,
let it be with your burdens,
made just for us. Amen.
