Acts 10: 9-17

The next day as Cornelius’s messengers were nearing the town, Peter went up on the flat roof to pray. It was about noon, and he was hungry. But while a meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance.  He saw the sky open, and something like a large sheet was let down by its four corners.   In the sheet were all sorts of animals, reptiles, and birds. Then a voice said to him, “Get up, Peter; kill and eat them.”

“No, Lord,” Peter declared. “I have never eaten anything that our Jewish laws have declared impure and unclean.”

But the voice spoke again: “Do not call something unclean if God has made it clean.” The same vision was repeated three times. Then the sheet was suddenly pulled up to heaven.

Peter was very perplexed. What could the vision mean?

  2. informal
(of a person or mood) melancholy, sad, or depressed.

Blue for the new

The open sky above our heads is the origin of the phrase “blue sky thinking”, and was exactly what God had in mind for Peter.   A good Jew, he had kept the elaborate food rules devised by his ancestors, but God had a new lesson for him.

Prayer

Lord, how often I hold on to the comfortably familiar !
It’s not really my fault – my life has something of a routine, and that helps me to keep on top of things, but like Peter, I think I’m sometimes on auto-pilot.   Going through the motions; following the rules; keeping my life chugging on.
Help me to look up sometimes, to see the limitless blue of your sky above.
It’s always changing – Sky blue, Cobalt blue, Ultramarine, grey, even purple before a storm; but never predictably the same.
Lord, help me to see beyond what I know and am used to : to do a bit of blue-sky thinking with you –
Are there new people you want me to meet, befriend, encourage or support ?
Is there a dream, a project, a trip – something I’ve always secretly wanted to do – is that dream a gift from you ?    One I should act on and change the way my life is ?
Have you a call for me ?  Just like Peter, from his nets and beaches to a servant of God.
Do you have a task that only I can do for you ?
I’m listening Lord, and ready for blue-sky thinking,
Guide me in your way.

Amen.
