Blessed are the peacemakers

September 25, 2016 0 0

Matthew 5: 8-10

Blessed are the pure in heart,
    for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Father,

We remember the old Latin word for priest was "pontifex" which means "path maker" or "bridge builder" and as we have been called to be "kings and priests to God", the work of path making and bridge building is one we cannot default on, if we are to follow our Lord.

Forgive us then, when it has been easier to build walls instead of bridges,
and deal with the things in our hearts which make wall building so easy and bridge building so difficult.
Our saviour never claimed his rights, nor his place, but washed feet, sacrificed and blessed.
Thus through a generous eye and humble spirit,
he healed, restored and united so many who were wounded, hurt and rejected,
to form not a chain of hopeless refugees but whole people,
a steadfast church, and a radiant bride for himself.
Enable us then to follow the "prince of peace" and to do the works he calls us to do, in His name.

Amen.
