Matthew 24: 42-44 (NRSVA)

42 Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. 43 But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.

It can sometimes feel hard to stay awake in the winter when days are darker and it feels like a lot of nature wants to snuggle down. This winter is predicted to be especially cold as the climate changes around us, which might make us want to hibernate even more but as the passage suggests we need to make sure we don’t end up asleep on the job.

What if Jesus arrived in your town today, strolling out of a nearby workshop having just knocked together a few mini houses to keep people warm overnight. I know I would be ashamed at how asleep I have been when it comes to working towards peace, to keep all people safe in the cold and dark and towards climate justice in the world, or even in my own little life. Of course we know from Jesus’ time here on earth that he would have compassion for the things which have held us back from acting but that he would have a few stories and actions to help us on our way to being awake for peace again.

PRAYER:

Dear God of action

Teach us to keep our eyes open for ways we can help bring peace this season.

Lead us to make new peace within our home lives too.

Help us to make change, campaign, support and walk alongside others to spread peace

Amen
