A mustard seed

Matthew 13:31-32

31 He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field.
32 Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”

A seed. A tiny thing – as small as a pin head – but full of great potential and promise.

Have you ever planted a seed and waited for it to grow, looking every day to check for signs of life?

Waited, as doubt and disappointment creep in, wondering if life will appear?

Sometimes we may not even know the value or significance of what we do or say, God can use it in so many ways; it may lie dormant for a while before bringing growth and transformation, it may even be years before any fruit is visible but let’s not give up hope, let’s wait in faith for that which is planted to bear fruit. The harvest will be plentiful.

What #smallthings give you faith today to keep waiting?

Father God

Waiting is hard.

I’m impatient,

Programmed for busyness and action,

The world encourages me to look for instant results,

And yet your ways are not the world’s ways.

Your ways are slower,

Your time scale – eternity.

Slow me – so that I discover your rhythm,

Hold me – so that your steps become my steps,

Teach me your dance – so that I might make it my own,

Fill me with your spirit, your breath – so that your fruits may be seen in me

And I might find the patience to wait and know your joy while I do.

And as I wait for fruit enough to harvest

Give me faith, to wait with expectation, even through the darkness,

And faith enough to recognise your kingdom when I see it.

Amen.
