Psalm 90: 12-17

Oh! Teach us to live well!
    Teach us to live wisely and well!
Come back, God—how long do we have to wait?—
    and treat your servants with kindness for a change.
Surprise us with love at daybreak;
    then we’ll skip and dance all the day long.
Make up for the bad times with some good times;
    we’ve seen enough evil to last a lifetime.
Let your servants see what you’re best at—
    the ways you rule and bless your children.
And let the loveliness of our Lord, our God, rest on us,
    confirming the work that we do.
    Oh, yes. Affirm the work that we do!

The Message

I chose this translation from The Message as it seems to add a dimension of sheer joy despite the psalmist’s complaints to an apparently absent or uncaring God. Find a moment today to stop and wait for God, whether it’s to be ‘surprised by love at daybreak’ or ‘letting the loveliness of the Lord rest on you’; stop and root yourself in that promise of love.

What is your response?

What do you hear God calling you to?

Maybe a symbol of ‘living well’ might be to ask, how we use our time.

Take ten minutes today to look at a week of your time (168 hours) and try to account for it:

  • Ask yourself if the balance is right for you? …
  • How much time is spent with God? …
  • How much for others? …
  • Are there surprises in the results? …

Lord,

We give thanks for the gift of life and the gift of time;

show us the joys of ‘wasting time’ with you;

reveal to us when we waste time on things which don’t give us life.

We have known days of frustration.

we have known days of sadness,

and we have known days of sheer joy.

Whatever today brings

help us to be honest with you

and to accept your rule and your blessing alike.
