With me, Lord?

Jeremiah 1:4-9

The Call of Jeremiah

4 The word of the Lord came to me, saying,

5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
    before you were born I set you apart;
    I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

6 “Alas, Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.”

7 But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord.

9 Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth."

Loving God, I can imagine how the young Jeremiah must have felt. Intimidated. Over-awed. Frightened. Out of his depth.

Often as not, I feel that way too. I’m not sure that I’d be able to do what you ask and I’m only tool aware of my own shortcomings.

Then I hear you tell Jeremiah that you will be with him. And you tell him that you really don’t want to hear about his limitations.

Lord, might it be that you will be with me in the same way? Might you use me, just as you used Jeremiah?

Thinking about that, I feel excitement building up in me! What possibilities lie before me, I wonder, and how might you work through me?

Lord, I don’t suppose Jeremiah really knew what he was getting himself into but he trusted that you would be with him – whatever. Help me to trust you in the same way. Lord, be with me, I pray.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
