Acts 2:42-47

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favour of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Bedroom tax, and rising fuel costs
Empty purse - the week’s just begun
Loan sharks patrol, the net is tightening
Shut your door and keep yourself to yourself
No-one need know the struggles you face
The fear that camps at our door every day
God help us!

Mum says, ‘I remember when’
Neighbours looked out for one another
A problem shared was a problem halved
A pint of milk, a loaf of bread, a cigarette, small kindnesses
But oh the difference - we were a community;

Lord when did life become ‘what’s good for me’
Instead of what’s good for us,
We’ve never had it so good, we’re told and yet -
We’ve never been so sad and alone
You have made us for relationship
With you, and with one another
As a reflection of your holy community
Father Son and Holy Spirit

Give us faith and strength and courage to believe and try again
To ditch the individualism and the empty promises it offers
To receive in full measure all you have for us
To give and watch as the gift is returned in full
Pressed down, shaken together to make room for more,
running over and poured into our laps.
A sharing, thriving community shaped by the love of God,
Will you join us, will you come?
