Where to?

Genesis 12:1-5

The Call of Abram

12 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.

2 “I will make you into a great nation,
    and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
    and you will be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you,
    and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
    will be blessed through you.”

4 So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran. 5 He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there.

‘God, you have a nasty habit of stirring us out of our comforts! No doubt Abram and Sarai were perfectly settled in Harran. Life had been good to them and they had nothing much more than a happy retirement to look forward to.

Then you showed up, Lord. And you called them to ‘Go.’

If it had been me I would have had several questions. I would have wanted to know what to pack and when I’d be back. But most of all I would have wanted to know ‘Where to?’ ‘Where do you want me to go, Lord?’

But Abram and Sarai were packing up and ready just as soon as your invitation arrived.

Lord, you call us to be people of the way – your way. Give me courage, I pray, to go when you call.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
