Wellbeing Thursday

Listen to this daily worship
1 Corinthians 6: 12-20 (NRSVA)
12 ‘All things are lawful for me’, but not all things are beneficial. ‘All things are lawful for me’, but I will not be dominated by anything. 13 ‘Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food’, and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is meant not for fornication but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 And God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Should I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! 16 Do you not know that whoever is united to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For it is said, ‘The two shall be one flesh.’ 17 But anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. 18 Shun fornication! Every sin that a person commits is outside the body; but the fornicator sins against the body itself. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? 20 For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.
Here in these verses you can see the formation of a theology of interdependence. Our new identity is linked with the risen Christ. Our bodies belong to God. We are integrated into Christ by the power and presence of the Holy Spirit. Yet we are still individual persons. Created to be free to love and to live in communion with each other and to live in holiness, wholeness in other words, in completeness with God.
We are walking moving living temples of praise and adoration to the God who made us. We are entities that require a body in order to be eternal. Life after death is not about disembodied spirits but about being raised to life with a new body, in anticipation of what we will be in eternity. We are called to live out our new identity here in time. Thus we must live in such a way that we honour God in how we conduct our relationships with each other and how we honour each other’s body and identity.
PRAYER:
Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Creator of life and all that we can be
Creator of the blueprint for our wellbeing
Forgive us when we disrespect one another
When we misuse our bodies or that of another
When we ignore the signs that tell us we are under stress
When we work ourselves to breaking point —
Taking grace for granted
Bring us back from the danger point
Re-balance our pressured lives
Inspire us to respect our bodily limits
Encourage us to nurture and care for each other
Inspire us to pursue our best physical and spiritual formation
All for your glory.
Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Creator of life and all that we can be
Teach us how to live well.
Time to Reflect:
Take a moment to reflect upon the last Communion service you attended. This is an outward sign of your inward union with Jesus. We are interdependent on each other as we live and move in Christ. Now look forward to the next time you break bread in his presence.
