Isaiah 9: 2- 8

The people who walked in darkness
   have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness—
   on them light has shined.

For a child has been born for us,
   a son given to us;
authority rests upon his shoulders;
   and he is named
Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God,
   Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
His authority shall grow continually,
   and there shall be endless peace
for the throne of David and his kingdom.
   He will establish and uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
   from this time onwards and for evermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Lord, how long ago you promised,
    How often you reassured.
    The prophets spoke
    And promised salvation
    Redemption
    Freedom
    The coming of the Kingdom.
    How many years passed
    With no sign
    No change
    No advent …
    “The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.”
    But when?

    The people lost hope
    Turned from you
    Turned against the prophets
    Walked in the darkness of hopelessness
    Of faithlessness
Of despair.

I know this despair.
I have lived in this darkness.
I have wandered in this wilderness.
Wrestled with my doubts
Pleaded for a sign
Hammered on the door of heaven
With importunate demands for answers.
Met silence.

Lord, you keep your promises.
Your time is not our time
Lord, I believe
Help my unbelief.
