To See Ourselves As Others See Us

February 09, 2015 0 0

Matthew 6:5

“And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites;
for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners,
so that they may be seen by others.
Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.”

Where did we get the idea that you wanted pomp and circumstance?
When did you tell us that following you was about public applause?

When our gatherings become too respectable,
let the voice of the un-included break in.
When our services become too solemn,
let the children cause some disorder.
When our conventions become too perfect,
let the vulnerabilities of real life
restore reality
and compassion.

God,
you who know us most intimately,
show us the way
to be true to you,
show us the way
to be true to ourselves.
