The Gift of Love

1 Corinthians 13:5

Love is not ill-mannered or selfish or irritable; love does not keep a record of wrongs

Ill-mannered – me?
Well sometimes, I have to confess........despite the years of teaching about ‘the right way’ to speak and act.
Selfish
– how often do I think or even say aloud ‘but it’s my time or my efforts’ and I don’t want to share them with other people.
Irritable
– being tired, overworked, under pressure – it’s not an excuse for the snappy words, the irrational demands.
Keeping a record of wrongs
– some of us find it easier than others to eradicate memories that can be used to rub salt in wounds.

Loving God, it’s hard to look in the mirror and see the dark side of ourselves. To see ourselves as others see us, some of the time at least.
But I believe that your love in Jesus and through his Spirit can help us to turn over to the ‘flip side’ – to show the opposite face to the world.
Help me to stop and think before I act badly. Help me to consider ‘what would Jesus do?’ when I’m tempted to act unlovingly.
