The Depths of God’s Love

October 01, 2016 0 0

Luke 23: 40-43

"But the other criminal rebuked him. ‘Don’t you fear God,’ he said, ‘since you are under the same sentence?  41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.’ Then he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." Jesus answered him, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.’

Lord sometimes I worry about the people near to me
who don't recognise just how much you love them.
Some lead decent lives, others might be far from you,
and it saddens me to think of the pain
and emptiness they just might be choosing as their future.

Then I remember the two thieves hanging on the crosses beside yours
one has a mouth full of curses and self pity,
the other simply asks you to remember him when you come into your kingdom;
and he hears the wonderful words, "Today you will be with me in paradise".

Slowly we begin to see the depths of your love,
and a compassion which will reach out, even in dying breath,
to save a man others would write off.
And we realise with tears
that no one knows the business a man will do with you in the last minute of his life,
for you are a saviour indeed who will never turn us away.

Blessed be your name.
Amen
