The Compulsion of the Spirit

Psalm 104: 33-34

33 I will sing to the Lord all my life;
    I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.
34 May my meditation be pleasing to him,
    as I rejoice in the Lord.

Gaming can become an obsession. So can the compulsion to golf or garden. They are leisure pursuits providing a sense of satisfaction in life.  I have a friend who is obsessed with singing! Meet him and he is invariably humming and swaying to an internal tune.

Being called to and shaped by the Spirit is a little like being obsessional about something you enjoy and provides a sense of satisfaction. Our Church life can often seem removed from this ideal, however, when it does chime with the song of the Gospel then we begin to understand what Jesus was all about and why he called us to this life.

Prayer

Lord, may this inward experience of prayer be seen as an expression of the powerful spiritual engine upon which we outwardly perform Your will for the world.

Where we remember the person in need of a chat or a text. Where our email of support or donation to a cause makes a difference. As we join with a wider community seeking justice, health and wellbeing for the poor and disadvantaged of Your kingdom.

As I set aside my own thoughts and concerns, release me to listen to the tune of Christ crowding out the frustrations of Church life. Giving me a rhythm and a synchronicity with the Spirit’s movements as we sense the moods and spiritual needs of those around me. Helping me to appreciate the complexities of situations intertwined with the simplicity of responding in love. Amen.
