Matthew 6: 19-21 (NRSVA)

19 ‘Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Yesterday we were thinking about God as a time traveller. Today we become the time travellers. Only this time Jesus is reminding us that we’re all on a journey in which one day we will pass through the time barrier into eternity. At that point we will no longer be able to access our earthly treasures. In preparation for the eternal move Jesus advises us to store up funds in the heavenly bank of God. In other words set our minds now in the present on things that will last, things that are eternal. We’ve to start stockpiling grace filled lives.

PRAYER:

Lord of time

Ruler of eternity

I forget that I’m just passing through time

Each moment takes me closer

To the time barrier

The crossover

I’m really a time traveller

I’m travelling light

Your Spirit’s light within me

Leading me

Transforming the darkness within me

Giving me life

Teach me how to stockpile grace

For I too easily can collect rust instead of trust

Lord of Time

Guide me to live in the light of your eternal light.
