Spirit of Holiness

Acts 2:1-4

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

God, your holiness burns like a fire,
white-hot.
Who am I to come close to this, to you?

With Isaiah I say,
"I'm ruined. I am a person of unclean lips".
But with Isaiah
I ask for the live coal to touch my lips.
With Isaiah
I ask to hear the words,
"Your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for".

So with growing confidence I pray -
Sprit of holiness,
make me holy
but make me not a prude.
Make me holy
but make me not aloof.
Make me approachable.
Give me the holiness of Jesus,
the friend of tax-collectors and sinners
