John 14: 15-17 (NIV)

15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

According to the Gospels something entirely new happens with the Holy Spirit at that first Pentecost. While the Spirit had been with God’s people in the past, now he promises to be in them. The promise of the vine, in the chapter following today’s reading, talks of the Spirit in terms of the sap rising through the bark of the vine, bringing sustenance and life and wellbeing. Paul will talk both of the fruit of the Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit. But also of the gifts of the Spirit which are in us for we share in worship. Paul talks of the Spirit in liquid terms, poured out, flowing into us, rising up in us. A spirit who is alive and active and occupies our lives.

PRAYER:

Our prayer today is the words of the Daniel Iverson hymn:

“Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me
Break me, melt me, mould me, fill me.
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.”
