Isaiah 64: 7-8

7 There is no one who calls on your name,
    or attempts to take hold of you;
for you have hidden your face from us,
    and have delivered us into the hand of our iniquity.
8 Yet, O Lord, you are our Father;
    we are the clay, and you are our potter;
    we are all the work of your hand.

In today’s passage the prophet is reminiscing about past glories when God seemed to be known and respected by a past generation. He speaks of a time when God seemed to make his presence felt through signs and wonders.

Now he is living in a time when all seems lost. God seems to have given up on his people. He poses the question, could it be God is angry with a generation that has ignored his laws and turned from his ways?

The prophet includes himself in the picture. He sees the human condition as hopeless, even when we act in a right manner we are still like beggars wearing filthy rags.

Finally he makes a special plea. He reminds God that we are part of his workmanship. He infers that God as the potter can take us up again and reshape us.

The prophet speaks to all of us today. Advent reminds us that God has not abandoned us. Even when we deserve it. He is not keeping us at a distance. Perhaps it is we who keep him at his distance.

Lord

I’m not looking for a star

Or even an angel

To tell me you care

I think I’m looking for a change of heart

To tell you

I want to care again

Lord

I’m not looking for signs

But I do wonder about life and meaning

I guess

I’m searching

For a moment of peace

The glory and joy can wait

But help me love

Once more

Even for a moment

This Christmas
